I've done a number of soft resets so that they would no longer be in use, but I keep getting the same message.
The two files are under the heading IE Cache Files. They are:
\Windows\Profiles\guest\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5; and
\Windows\Profiles\guest\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat
What's going on? Are they necessary files? If so, why are they showing up in my scan?

It's only one file (index.dat) the other entry is the directory containing this file.
This file is used by the system most of the time (no harm in not deleting it as it's usually small).
If you want to get rid of the warning message which MemMaid displaies, go to the cleaner options and turn OFF "Warn if deleting files was denied"
