Question Converting Music with WMP10

OK - Here is the story of my woes;

I have many mp3 files encoded at a high bitrates on my computer and I want to use the built-in sync feature in wmp10 to transfer them to my X5. In order to conserve space I have set it to re-encode the files to 64kbs. This worked well for listening to the music with wmp, but now I want to move to a program like gsplayer.

My problem is that wmp10 converted all of my mp3's to wma's which gsplayer cannot play. I've tinkered with the settings in wmp, but I cannot stop it from automatically converting the files.
Short of manually converting and transferring the music, is there another way I can get low-bitrate mp3's on my axim with wmp10 or another program?
