...but on the subject of whether you should leave your PC on or switch it off, consider the following:

Suppose you have a new HD with a mtbf of, say, 5 years. If you leave your PC on 24/7 then you can expect the HD to fail in 5 years, but if you only have your PC on 8 hours a day then you can expect the HD to fail in 15 years (or 10 to 15 years if you want to make a very generous allowance for "switch-on" wear and tear)

Apart from voltage surges, heat is one of the biggest killers of CPU's. The hotter the CPU the more likely it is to fail. The longer a CPU is hot the more likely it is to fail. If you keep your CPU running 24/7 then naturally you bring the dreaded date of failure nearer.

Most importantly, if you switch your PC and peripherals off when you are not using them you WILL conserve energy.

And finally, always remember that 86.4% of statistics are made up.
