The primer, in short:

For lack of a better term, the registry is your PDA's (and your PC's) DNA. It tells it everything, from the color of the fonts to where everything is located.

There are changes that can be made to it, but only by experienced people - which would affect various things and customize some things.

Delete the registry and you have an expensive brick. Then you would have to do a hard reset to allow the firmware, or permanent program in memory, to reload everything again. In so doing, any programs in the PDA would be lost.
