If you leave your PC on 24/7 then you can expect the HD to fail in 5 years, but if you only have your PC on 8 hours a day then you can expect the HD to fail in 15 years (or 10 to 15 years if you want to make a very generous allowance for "switch-on" wear and tear)

Apart from voltage surges, heat is one of the biggest killers of CPU's. The hotter the CPU the more likely it is to fail. The longer a CPU is hot the more likely it is to fail. If you keep your CPU running 24/7 then naturally you bring the dreaded date of failure nearer.

Most importantly, if you switch your PC and peripherals off when you are not using them you WILL conserve energy.

And finally, always remember that 86.4% of statistics are made up.
You pointed out that heat is one of the biggest killers of CPU's (and your right), as the reason for shutting down a PC, but you fail to realize that do to the temp changes that occur inside your PC case everytime you turn on and off your comp this also effects ALL of your PC Component's life. So it is better to turn on and leave your computer on, all the time, because once the temp stabilizes inside your case other then failing cooling fans, Temp will be stabilized and will help your PC last longer!! As for saving Energy rather then shutting down your monitor, you should choose sleep mode, this will save you money in energy run costs,at the same time help your monitor last longer also due to not constantly turning it on and off as in above!! :approve:
