I don't have the Earthmate, but I do Xmap and I cannot recommend it. It has major out-of-date problems, the maps are not very true-to-life and it is awkward to use. The true-to-life problem is a result of the way they chose to implement the maps. The mapping goes from point-to-point, with straight lines between these points, even if the road curves. So the Beltway around Washington, DC, for example, is not shown with smooth curves, it's shown as a series of straight lines connected together. You are almost never actually shown ON the road, just to either side of it. The errors in out-of-date areas are for roads changed more than a couple of years ago. Mapopolis and Teletype both got it right, but Xmap looks to be 8-9 years out of date.
I didn't try topo, so I can't comment on that.
