Are your desktops Dell machines? Are their USBs a few years old? Having had the same problem with my work computer I scoured the existing threads here and concluded that the driver for my USB at work was problematic (one of the threads, "Active Sync Keeps timing out-", quotes a Dell forum where the user concluded that the Dell Desktop's USB driver was the problem). Several people reported solving the problem by buying a USB hub (around $10). While I will do this eventually, I have simply avoided transferring large files (mp3s) at work.
