It simply remembers the way you last used it. If you normally view in month view mode, then that's how it opens. I use Dashboard, so I don't bother with much, but I disabled it to make sure I wasn't incorrect. When I click on the Calendar it opens exactly the way I last closed it. So, just make sure you are viewing in month mode when you close the Calendar.
