I find TextMaker to be very reliable. There are a very few things the desktop version of Word does that it cannot do (like track changes), but it is good.

If you want to preserve formating and have a program that allows you to read, add notes, and highlight text (but not actively edit the text) I would recommend REPLIGO. I use repligo for reading all my Word and PDF documents. I also use their desktop conversion utility to download and read webpages offline. Highly recommended.
