i'm in 10th grade but yah, i use my x50 for all that good stuff. So heres a rundown of everything i do during the average school day.
In the morning i turn on my axim while its still on the cradle (its also my main alarm, the volume thing isn't an issue, and its very reliable) and have it sync all my emails received over the night, which i read whenever. When i'm in class and there is an assignment due,or i just think of something that needs to be done, i whip it out (and my teachers don't care) copy it down, and put it out of mind (i'm really forgetful so that last part really isn't a choice ^-^). We have to read for 20 or so minutes during class so i take it out and read a few word documents (some over 500 pages in length) and have no problem reading them, just alot of scrolling hehe. Lunchtime i don't do much but play games since the nearest access point is off campus :S. Random Times when i'm really bored or not doing anything i'll review for some tests using a flash card program and or listen to music, mabey watch the occasional video ect ect. And as soon as i get home i throw my Ax on the cradle and see what needs to be taken care of in Outlook 2003 (Outlook 2k2 is included with the axim). I don't take notes with my Ax YET because i have no keyboard and a stylus only goes so far :).
Programs Used - Pocket Informant and Pocket Breeze for Tasks, schedualing, and today screen intergration.

Betaplayer, one of the best video players for ppc's
PocketMusic, the best music player i've tried out , that can also play .OGG, however i've been recently having some problems with it quitting on me after 3 seconds of play on fresh installs, old versions, new versions, everything.
SkyForce and Warfare Incorporated are the only games i play and i can't seem to get enough.

Try a bunch of different applications and see what you like. I know theres a software suite specifically for students but i can't find it on my junky desk (i hope theres a program for that, too!) Happy hunting.
