Chipset maybe?
I remember that VIA had certain chipsets that the USB ports wouldn't work correctly for some devices. I ran into this with one of the top of the line MSI motherboards a couple of years back. It worked with every device I connected EXCEPT the Lexmark X73 multi-function printer. I went round and round with that stupid thing, even flashed the motherboard with a couple of different versions of the BIOS, and still nothing. I eventually had to go to Wal-mart, of all places, and get a Belkin USB 2.0 card. Never had a problem after that. Oh, and I've read many places that using a hub, even a powered hub, can cause sync problems. So, depending on your chipset, power supply to your motherboard (many machines are underpowered), and presence of a hub, any one of those might be contributing to the problem.
