Are xvid files interlaced? I create xvid .avi files with Fairuse and want to convert them to try out the latest PocketTV Classic Edition. I've got an X50v so the closer a convertor gets me to 640 X 480 the happier I'll be. :)

That probably depends of the xvid files, but it is likely that they are NOT interlaced.
If they were, then you would see the interlaced effect as soon as you pause the video in a moving scene. The interlaced effect is that of two different frame alternating very rapidly when the video is paused. Moreover, it would be sub-optimum to code a movie in interlaced. It is much more efficient to de-interlace any 3:2 pull-down interlace that was created for display on NTSC-type TV sets.
If your PC has a netshow xvid codec installed (i.e. if you can play your xvid files with WMP on the PC), they the xvid files can be used as a source for tMPGENC. tMPEGEnc has no problems generating 640x480 MPEG files. That's what we used to create the test files in
