The first program I got for my Axim(x5) was Sprite backup. Backing up via Activesync saves your PIM data and My Documents folder; but on hard reset, you have to re-install apps.
Backing up to a storage card means you can restore everything.
Sprite is great since the backup file can be an executable. Don't need the program to restore.
Plus you can control what you backup and restore individual files.
Also, you can backup to the desktop and restore from the desktop.

I back up daily to desktop and storage card. If I not on my home system, at least I backup to the storage card.
Sprite allows autonaming of backups so that I have two backups on my card.
