You'll never get enough brightness for outdoor use. The Ax screen is a compromise.
Most equipment designed for outdoor use has a reflective screen. It works really great outside or in a bright room. But if there's less light available, it's impossible to read. Most equipment designed for indoor use (like laptops) uses a backlit screen. They work really well inside, but if used outside, the sunlight washes them out so they are impossible to see.
The Ax uses a "transflective" display. It has a backlight for indoor use. It can reflect light for use outdoors. Actually, the screen is very readable if you angle it to catch a lot of sun. It's a huge improvement over early color PDAs, which were totally useless outdoors. But ultimately, it's a compromise.
