I was working with "PocketList" which kept its information stored somewhere, but probably separate from the other PPC databases. The program itself is stored on my SD card, and I can terminate it so that it is not running in memory, but when it is restarted its data is back.

I believe all programs that store data have to store it in some form of "file" in memory. Otherwise you could terminate the program with the Dell switcherbar or some other third party application and not have an opportunity to save the data. When contacts and calendar information are entered that data must be stored to its "file" immediately.
