After some frustration, I found out if I go to File/Find File, then I can choose the directory and all the files in it would be selected (over 50 files). If I go to File/Open File and select all the files there, nothing happens - it just returns to the main screen blank. If there are fewer like 20 files, then selecting File/Open Files and selecting all the files works fine.
