I am not sure that in the case of one expensive piece of hardware damaging another piece of hardware, that 86% is really all that comfortable a probability of safety. If the poll is accurate, then 14 out of every 100 users purchasing will have hardware failure attributable to the Axim. If I had just bought the device and knew that there was a 1.4/10 chance that my computer could be damaged, I sure would be nervous.
I do agree that the issue hasn't been adequately addressed by Dell and likely will not be.
