Also, anything with a lot of wire can set them off. I used to work at circuit city, and the RF tags were basically a coil of VERY thin/small wire about 30 feet long. Anything that had around 30 ft of wire would set it off. So anytime someone bought speaker wire, phone cord, etc over about 25 feet....it would go off. So if anything you bought had a long wire, then that's probably it.
