Standard OS

That's what I've been preaching for some time, now. And, if some threads I've seen elsewhere are an indication, Microsoft may finally be getting the message. Stop wasting time on the middleman (pronounced "OEM") and lay down the law: conform to the following hardware specs or no OS. Any OEM-specific features need to be added so that the only thing required is an app or driver. That way, we would be able to purchase the OS upgrade if our hardware has the capacity and features. Microsoft has NEVER so completely rewritten their software to the point that it wouldn't run on previous generation devices. But it has to start with them telling all OEMs to standardize their core, just like the desktops do, and add drivers for other things. Right now, though, that can't happen because what MS sends to the OEMs gets modified and specialized quite a bit before we see it. That's why it's such a mess for upgrades. I don't know how many people whined when the WM2k3 upgrade came out because it didn't this or did that. And some even loaded back to PPC2k2. So why would Dell or anyone else go through the wrestling match customizing an upgrade that would have puny sales and all that grief? Mind you, I was VERY happy with the upgrade and I would have loved to have purchased an upgrade to WM2k3se---which was hardly a revolutionary jump, but did they produce the upgrade? NO---however, by that time Dell had decided upgrades weren't worth the design hassle vs. profit. I'm betting the X50v owners are going to be crying the same blues we did. And even if they don't, at this point it wouldn't be worth it to upgrade when the better machines will be coming out with WM2k5 on them already. I'm hoping in 2006 Microsoft will put the OEMs to the much-needed thumbscrews and get them in line. I'm tired of being held hostage.
