HELP!!!

I have just bought a DVD rom drive to take advantage of this guide. All seems to go well , but when I extract the Film/Program from th DVD to hard disk it seems to take forever! I recently was extracting a 3 hour Comedy series and after 45mins the progress bar showed "5 percent done" with an estimated 13 hours to go! I know it takes a while, but this seems ridiculous!

So, how long are other people having to wait for this process to do? I have a 1800 Athlon XP processor and 256mb Ram. Surely somethings gone wrong? Help much appreciated
