Not a good idea....
You really are inviting a world of hurt by not going with the recommended application combination. One thing I've seen discussed is that not much besides Outlook will really work with ActiveSync, which means most likely if you go with some other e-mail/contact/calendar program you will also have to go with another synchronization application. You should try doing a Google search....
