Well, it is an extreme solution, but if THAT doesn't solve it, I don't know what could. So, if worse comes to worst, try that, and good luck!
Thanks for the feedback. Yeh, system restore would have been an option, except that WinXP in its wisdom, deleted all prior checkpoints when it was low on disk space! :(
