There's a thread here that discusses the lithium ion batteries Actually, there are several talking about it but the one I'm thinking of has a link provided by one of the Mods that discusses this technology. The gist is, it's better to keep the battery as fully charged as possible. Letting it regularly drain to 20% before charging will shorten the battery life (Li batteries do not have a 'memory' problem like NiCad batteries).
So, the rule of thumb is: use the battery when you need it, charge it when you can.
