I got the 300 for $$$ reasons, plus I wasn't interested in the cradle. I installed a 128SD card and loaded a ton of applications on that. I haven't determined a situation where I have any problems with the lesser memory of the 300. If you are concerned about the extra cost of the 400 then you will do fine with the 300.
One of my theories about the 300 vs 400 is that some users could buy the 400 and load their apps in main memory, and not need to buy any expansion memory whereas if they bought the 300 they would have to spend extra for a memory card. Another of my theories says that some rare apps, perhaps using GPS and maps, will benefit from the additional main memory.
