Have you tried a hard reset at all? If WMP is acting buggy, a hard reset would have fixed it. If it's a problem with the version of WMP, then updating the ROM *might* help. You might also want to try different audio players such as gsplayer or betaplayer (both free).

If you do decide to upgrade to 2003, be prepared to lose all your current settings and programs. It's the same as upgrading the OS on your PC. During the process, you will be prompted to do a backup of your current ROM. I would highly recommend doing so. :)
