I don't have a USB cable so can't help you there, but you can unplug the lead from the back of the cradle and plug it directly into the bottom of the X5, so you don't need to carry the cradle with you.
Better still, the X5 has a standard power socket so if you forget your power block you can use any mains adapter with an output of about 5v DC. On a recent holiday I used the mains adapter for a Creative MP3 player to charge my X5.
