A reply in another forum from AximMom stated that in her case the same problem was caused by corrupted registry entries after uninstalling Netfront Browser. I never had this installed, but decided to download a registry editor and examine my registry entries. I discovered that I had a key for "http" and another for "https" but they contained no sub keys and no values. After creating "DefaultIcon" and "Shell/Open/Command" keys, with the latter pointing to "iexplore.exe %1", hyperlinks from within e-mails and other text documents now work correctly.

Care needs to be exercised when editing the registry. At first I did not think my technique worked until I saw that I had created the "Command" key with a blank after the "d". (This was caused by using Word Completion with the "add space after suggested word" option.) While it was hard to spot, I eliminated the blank and everything worked fine.
