Have you ever actually TESTED that? Nowadays you really would need one heck of a magnet to do any real damage.
BTW, I've been very tossed on the hard drive idea. If they make one that uses no more power than a CF card I'm game, BUT only if there's a large chunk of cache memory as well. You'd want it working more like HDD-based MP3 players, where it temporarily copies the files it needs from the drive to memory. This way, while you're using an app, everything is being done in memory and not on the drive itself. This helps to cut down on the chance of the unfortunate accident of jarring/shaking (or dropping) the Axim while the HDD is being written to or read from, and in turn damaging a head or something.
