Who told you that? In fact, while it shouldn't matter which setting you use for the web and email, it is almost always necessary to have it set to Work/My Work Network for wireless sync and access to PC shares.

In any case, the settings Work vs Internet settings sometimes can be changed using the enter key on the onscreen keyboard (instead of the corner X). Other times, it seems that specific routers will cause them to revert to the previous settings. You could try starting fresh by removing your current network settings (you'll probably need to be out of the the router's range or turn it off) and setting them up fresh.
