The phone company depends on where you live of course.
I live in the UK and since the A03 ROM, I've had good net access with a Motorola V3 Razr. As said above, get a Bluetooth phone. My PDA connects to my phone and dails Orange, my phone company, to set up a GPRS connection and that's that. I'm especially impressed by how quick it is - setting it up at first was fiddly (I had to phone Orange a couple of times to get walked through the setup process) but since then, it's been great.
If I'm at home, my PDA uses my Wifi and that's that, no problem. If I'm outside the house and I try to access the web, it attempts to dial through the phone (and is easily killable for when I mistakenly access the web) and in about 10 seconds, the connection's up. I don't have to touch my phone or get it out of my pocket!
This is rambling off-topic a bit but I just had to say, I'm very impressed with the whole setup.
