Did you try the instructions at
http://tom61.arcadecontrols.com/axim_bootloader.html ? It contains all the steps necessary to load an X5 image on a non-functioning unit. The trickiest part is getting the button pushes in the correct order.
If you have the .img file on your PC from the upgrade process, you can copy that to a CF card.
