Putting the legality issue aside for a moment (and yeah kazaa is legal, some of the content isn't)...
I find it very interesting that the RIAA is using prosecution of their customers to force them to buy their product. "Hey I know we just had you arrested, but will you buy our cds now?"
Simply put, the labels and RIAA are dinosaurs that are trying to milk all they can out of their outdated content delivery monopoly. They need to find a way to make the content delivery both cheap, easy to use, contains complete albums, and allows the purchaser unrestricted use (hello pressplay - you suck and what's the deal with the encumbered files from applemusic?). The funny thing is is that the R&D work has been done for them for free many times - napster, kazaa et al. All the labels needed to do was find some way to get some reasonable micropaymet system working.
Interesting irony here - the 'legit' services like Pressplay are generating some revenue and yet no artist on an RIAA label has seen dime one from this. So please, just like when the government tells you 'think of the children' the RIAA is giving you the same load of shit when they say 'think of the artists'
