I don't think MSN Messenger has that capability for the Pocket PC (it sucks, really) but you can use regular chat. You can surf the internet pretty much just like home, it's not just text like on your phone, and you might have some problems with some websites that do Java (at least I do).
Other than that, you can check out all the websites, download stuff off the internet. However, you can also connect to your network via Internet and just stream or listen to your music via your network. Having your whole mp3 library on your Pocket PC is nice.
I use CF card because they are cheap and have more space. Best thing about the Axim is you have both cards, just buy a big 2GB CF and then get a 2GB SD later when money may not be an issue.
