Question Freeware Video Encoding

Recently, I've seen a lot of discussion about the "best" way to encode videos for your Axim. I am looking for a system of doing it that meets the following requirements
  • Can Convert Commercial DVDs
  • Can Convert Existing Movie Files (.avi & .mpg)
  • Can Convert Existing movie files w/ divx/xviD encoding
  • Can convert to 640x480 (for my Axim x50V!!!)
  • and is preferably free!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should be using/statements about the quality of video that is outputted? Primarily I am interested in good quality/small footprint, encoding time is not a huge deal to me, but I also don't want it to be ridiculous either.

So far I have heard of using Dvd Decrypter, and then using AutoGordian Knot. I have also heard of Fair Use. How is the quality of these programs?

Thanks for your input in advance!
