Dennis the Menace
Only on for a minute, but so far, so good in Miami.
Only 36,000 homes without power in the greater Dade/Broward metro areas as of 11pm EST. Huge numbers of old-growth trees down already in wonderful old Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, but the winds and rain have slowed in just the past hour and we have a reprieve now until morning when it passes directly across from us on the Gulf Coast other side of the Everglades. No news yet from Naples, Marco Island, Ft Myers, but I don't think they've gotten this side of Dennis the Menace yet.
I'm glad I stayed home tonight and skipped the traditional Hurricane Party. My best friend's neighborhood is in total darkness, 236 homes, and the best estimate for power resumption is now 36 hours, if no higher priorities occur.
But I can still commiserate with them, cellular service is spotty but working, and I've recreated the ambiance here by listening to Parrothead music (Jimmy Buffet) all night and drinking spiced Capt Morgan & cokes.
Ah, tradition, and soon to sleep after just a few more of these and the next forecast from the NHS, to dream of waking up and everyone around us is safe and sound.
Good night all,
P.S. Godspeed to our friends and colleagues in the UK. You've shown the world the indomitable British spirit, again.
HRH was truly majestic today, wasn't she?
