Well, this isn't generally a good idea. Since they are both lossy types you are definitely decreasing the quality converting mp3 to ogg.
A better comparison would be to rip the orignal track using ogg, I would be very surprised if you still saw the 50% size savings....
Some here will say mp3-ogg is "ok", well, I guess it depends on how important sound quality is.... my plan would be to keep all existing mp3's, but rip future tracks using ogg.
I believe even the vorbis people recommend the same thing- check their FAQ.
