After start-up of My PC, I need to re-load Active Sync!

I've had my Axim for a couple of months now, and by and large, all things doing with "syncing" are going well . . . but . . . if/when I have to shut down my PC, when it wakes up, Activesync can't find my Axim. I tried numerous solutions with no luck. I finally decided to start over and re-install the software from the CD-ROM. That worked; everything was fine until the next re-start of the PC. I now have a copy of Activesync on my hard drive ready to be re-installed.
The questions here are: What am I doing wrong? How can I fix it? Should I be saving something?
By the way, I'm using a cradle through a USB port. (When it fails it won't find the Axim in any USB port.)
