What kind of error messages?
There are two possible issues. (Well, actually, lots more. But 2 easy to check right off.) First, are you sure your PPC has DHCP enabled ("receive IP address from server")? Second, many public WiFi spots expect you to do some sort of logon (even when they're free). That's usually done with a splash screen coming up in your browser. So, be sure your browser is running before you turn WiFi on to make a connection. (Or at least open your browser up immediately after turning WiFi on.)
