I don't really know what would happen if you use a "splitter". I think you mean a simple device which has two inputs and leads the 2 entry signals to the same ouput, so you mean the opposit of a splitter, some kind of "joiner". My meaning is that it won't work because you'd need a more advanced "joiner" which mixes electronically both signals. Else sound quality will be bad.
But i am not sure of what i am talking about. But do you seriously need to turn the volume of your iPod so high? I mean when you use a GPS device you are concentrating on an unknow way, and have to listen carefully to the device. Loud music would disurb ;-)
AN alternative would be to buy a bluetooth speaker from Logitech which you can put into your 12V jack in your car. So you could send the voice generated by your GPS software through a bluetooth connection to the speaker. This speaker should have enough power for you to hear whats going on, even when listening to music. So if anybody uses such an bluetooth device, could you tell us if it would be loud enough?

Excuse me if i didn't understand your problem correctly and if i have only spammed this thread!
