Strange highlighting in Calendar: non-existing appointments?

OK, so I open Calendar and look at this week's appointments. Each appointment is highlighted (blue box). But I also notice that on the left hand side, the "6" is highlighted in blue. (Or else it is "7", or "4", or whatever. At first I thought that such a highlighted hour corresponded to the present clock time, but that is not so.) And a box in Tuesday (today) at 6 o'clock (or whatever) is highlighted, even though there is no appointment at that time. A closer look shows that the blue box is not quite like the blue box which indicates an actual appointment. Still, why is there a blue box there at all? It is annoying, because at first glance it looks like I have an appointment today at 6.

If I tap on, say, "5", then the spurious 6 o'clock appointment on Tuesday goes away, but then it looks like I had an appointment at 5 on Sunday (the first day of the week). If I tap on that time but on another day, then it looks like I have an appointment at that time on that new day.

I guess that when I tap, I am selecting an hour & a particular day. But if so, why is there no way to deselect it (without selecting something else)?

As a silly work-around, I tapped midnight to select it. A blue box there will not be seen, nor misinterpreted as an appointment.

Can anyone offer some better explanation or advice?
