I am not very sure about this, but I think it does not. I believe AS goes with the belief that you are using Outlook and so you would be having the Calendar/Contacts/Notes backup available within Outlook. So perhaps it does not bother copying the database again.

I also have this same option set and it is an excellent selection, IMO. What this option basically means is that if you have your self-restoring backup file on BIS/SD/CF and you happen to hard-reset then you just need to click on this backup file and Sprite will automatically install all your files back. The important thing to remember is that when you did hard-reset, you also ended up deleting Sprite Software from your PPC. But with this option you are able to get back your files without installing Sprite software first and then running the restore option. This can be very important, if you are on a trip and you don't have Sprite software handy to install first to your PPC so that you can restore your backup file. I hope I did not confuse the whole issue.
