Softmaker (www.softmaker.com) provides wonderful, full-featured applications which not only replace but far surpass pocket word and excel. Textmaker and Planmaker are wonderful programs: though expensive (if you can't wait for a sale), they are worth every penny.

I've used those apps and yeah, they're much better than the ROM apps. But, they're not better (and, IMO, they're actually inferior) to the apps that come standard on most Palm units (not the Palm OS ROM apps - the third party apps that are typically bundled).
As to the instability issue: I had a relatively unstable Smartphone for a while (which, btw, was a Palm OS smartphone). It was a total pain. There were times when I was waiting for a call, and found that my phone had locked up or needed to be reset. I love the Windoms Mobile environment, but it is not the most stable OS in the world. For a phone OS, I'd want greater stability.
