You need something like a bedside lamp with a flexible or extensible arm. Then attach a car mount to the arm. I attach two images of the unpowered Arkon car mount. You get the idea. The mount is included for free in most current GPS receiver offers. I have no idea how much it or something comparable costs on its own but it can't be much.
