Well couldn't get windoctor to run from the cd, wants to be installed. I opted out of that option. I thought about the hard drive failing as well. Any way to test that for sure?

"You may have a problem with Outlook 2000 hogging the system when it's going out looking for mail. This is known problem with no remedy. One partial remedy for Outlook's problems is to shut off the automatic send/receive function of Outlook."

Is this also an issue with later releases of outlook and why would it suddenly start causing a problem?

I also got the firefox idea from users on this site who love it. Should I really kill that? And just taking it off the PC, could that improve anything? I haven't been using it and it still seems slow. one thing I just noticed when I opened an email from a specific person, each time I open it, the system really slows big time. When i close it, no issues. Everytime from this one person. No images in the e-mail, a couple web links though. No graphics at all. i guess I could do a system restore and see if that works. if I do that will it alter my Outlook changes I've made in calendar and such?

Another option is reformatting the Hard Drive.

Would reinstalling the operating system help?
