Thanks very much for the response. Actually, I bought my Axim on Ebay, and only got a usb sync cable, not a cradle. Therefore, I can only connect via usb- when the axim is on, I can only synchronize (no power) and when the axim is off, I get power through the usb. So, I can see how your comment might apply. However, I use the same cable to sync at work, and it works just fine. Could my work usb port have more power running through it than the one i have at home?

Since this seemed illogical to me, I gave myself futher proof by unplugging the powered hub again, but his time I also unplugged the other couple of USB devices attached to the hub. Now, even without external power the downloads worked.

Since some of these devices are just flash card readers (I don't have a multi format reader) they do not usually need to be plugged in. In any event when unplugged, these device's USB connectors are sitting right next to the hub, so it's no effort to plug them back in when needed.
