Nitpick all you like :) Do we include opening ANY file over a network as "streaming". So I can stream a word document off a server by the same definition right, since word will open and start to paginate the document before it has finished completion of the transfer. I choose to be a little pickier how I use the word, but if you're ok with that definition I'm ok :)
I think software rate control is a fundamental issue when it's the largest enforcer of streaming performance on the world's largest network (the Internet) which has the worlds largest number of audio and video streaming clients. It might not be important to you, but to people who make a living from delivering content to Internet subscribers I'm pretty sure it's in their top 10.
I agree though - certainly try it and see, and if it works then great. If it doesn't, then do it properly :)
