Ok, I took all the advice in this thread and tried FairUse. Here’s what I found.
Encoding: Much faster! I have a dual CPU machine and FairUse did a much better job of keeping my processors busy. I believe this would also apply to machines with only one processor that employ hyper-threading. My encode time on a 96 minute movie was less that 80 minutes! (targeting a 310MB file w/ 96kbps audio)
Quality: Comparable with Auto Gordian Knot (AGK). The quoted poster said his FairUse quality was better – I’m curious how he determined that.
Playback complexity: This one is a bit obscure. I benchmarked the same video segment engoded by AGK and FairUse. The one by FairUse benchmarked significantly higher (approx. 10%). What good is that? I can run my Axim at a lower processor speed (power saving mode) and still not drop frames. That means the battery last longer which is important when I’m on a flight to Asia and have no power source
Ease of use: Got to agree here; FairUse is much more user friendly (and more informative) then AGK.
So I think I’m getting converted here but I have one more question. I used DVD-Decrypter to rip to an ISO on my hard-drive and then ran Fairuse against that ISO. What if I want to use a tool that needs VOBs? I can’t figure out how to get DVD-Decrypter to rip VOBs from an ISO. And I don’t want to rip to both ISO and VOB on my hard-drive. It’s big, but let’s not push it.
Any help? How can I pull a VOB out of a decrypted ISO?
