Hi Martin, thanks for the comments:
1) Am definitely getting a working GPRS connection using infra-red. The phone uses GPRS for its own browser. The phone was supplied by O2 online.
2) Also am getting a working GSM connection using infra-red.
3) Just to check the dial string command I copied and pasted the working dial-string command from the working infrared GPRS connection to the instructions for my Bluetooth GPRS connection. Same problem "the page you are looking for cannot be found" message from PIE.
Will see if I can find a friend with a Bluetooth O2 phone to see whether it's a Dell or a Samsung problem.
O2 data support still struggling.

O2 have now given up. They think that the bluetooth platform on the D500 might be "unstable". I have e-mailed Samsung user support for help.
