Only one problem: Laptops have the same problem!
Laptop (for this example) $1500
Case $100
Software (let's say, a few games, some professional software like photoshop, and some reference tools, plus an upgrade to office when buying the thing... thuogh you could carry a lot over from a computer, granted) $1000
WiFi card $80
Extra Battery of some sort, if you need a lot of life $80+
Extra chargers etc. $40
Mouse $20
Software aside you can still spend $400+ for extras on a laptop. Software IMHO is a separate deal, since it isnt really 'tied' to your system like a case, or battery. Software you can install on multiple computers, keep for years, since you buy a licence. Software can also greatly exceed hardware cost on any platform, depending on what you buy. When it gets down to it though, Hardware is just a means of running software, without it, hardware would be nothing more than an energy draining paperweight. :D

pfft... for the price of that you could get a
good 3-4 MP separate camera, a 512 MB CF card, and an Axim with a little left over for extras (not to mention the extras you'd need for the Clie... you can use this extras argument for just about anything...)... hmm... decisons decisions...
