Have seen this problem posted before and, the same week I saw it, it happened to me.

Basically, I believe the problem may be that the backup battery contacts are not fool-proof. Some folks recommend that they need to be cleaned (with a pencil eraser) from time to time.

Anyway, I have three main batteries that I need to switch out not-infrequently, when I'm away from home. On one switch, I lost all my data. Determined that my backup battery wasn't making good contact (BTW, I had dropped my Axim a few days before). Of course, the safest thing to do is to plug the Axim to an AC charger when changing the main battery -- but, of course, this is often not feasible (why would you be needing to switch out batteries if you had a power-source and recharger available?). The next best thing is to (as you did) make a backup before removing a battery.

Have changed out batteries dozens of times with no problems; but one bad experience has made me fairly cautious.
